Introduction

The age of Kasym Khan is one of the periods when the regional weight of the Kazakh Khanate became especially visible. In the early sixteenth century the khanate's authority grew, and its relations with neighboring powers entered a new phase.
The change was not limited to military success. Control over trade corridors, struggle for the Syr Darya towns, and the consolidation of internal order made the khanate a more stable political force.
The memory of Kasym Khan's Bright Path also belongs to this period and reflects how later generations remembered state order under his rule.

IFoundations of growth

Several pillars supported the rise of the khanate under Kasym Khan:
  • dynastic continuity after earlier crises;
  • recognition of khan authority by important steppe elites;
  • stronger access to strategic urban centers;
  • flexible diplomacy with neighboring powers.
The struggle for the Syr Darya towns was especially important because it expanded both the economic and the political reach of the khanate.
