Introduction

The history of Abulkhair's Horde is one of the keys to understanding the political space of the fifteenth-century Dasht-i Qipchaq. In its stronger phase the Horde possessed considerable military and political potential, yet over time internal rivalries and outside pressure weakened its cohesion.
The crisis was not only a problem of one ruling lineage. It also reflected tribal interests, the costs of repeated campaigns, and the appearance of new political centers that challenged older arrangements.
This weakening formed part of the wider historical setting that accelerated the separation of the groups led by Kerei and Janibek.

ICauses of decline

The weakening of the Horde can be explained by several factors:
  • long campaigns that exhausted the political center;
  • a growing number of dissatisfied factions;
  • fragmentation among competing elite groups inside the ulus;
  • external pressure from neighboring powers.
Under such conditions the old center gradually lost its integrating role in the steppe.
