Overview
Afsharid Iran, also known as Afsharid Persia or the Afsharid Empire, was an Iranian empire established by the Turkoman Afshar tribe. Founded on March 21, 1736, by Nader Shah, a military commander who deposed the last Safavid ruler, it ruled Iran during the mid-18th century. During Nader Shah's reign, the empire reached its greatest extent since the Sasanian Empire, encompassing modern-day Iran, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, parts of Central Asia, Arabia, the Indian subcontinent, Iraq, and Turkey. After his death, the empire largely fragmented, with Afsharid rule confined to Khorasan. The dynasty was finally overthrown in 1796.
