Overview
Alodia, also known as Alwa, was a medieval Nubian kingdom located in what is now central Sudan. Founded around 600 CE, its capital was the city of Soba, situated near modern-day Khartoum at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers. Alodia was the last of the three Nubian kingdoms to convert to Christianity in 580 CE. It possibly reached its peak between the 9th and 12th centuries, exceeding its northern neighbor, Makuria, in size, military power, and economic prosperity. Soba prospered as a trading hub, with goods arriving from various regions. The kingdom dissolved around 1504 CE, likely after Soba fell to either Arabs or the Funj.
