Overview
Baekje was an ancient Korean kingdom located in southwestern Korea, existing from 18 BCE to 660 CE. It was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, alongside Goguryeo and Silla. Founded by Onjo, Baekje claimed succession from the state of Buyeo. At its peak in the 4th century, it controlled much of the western Korean peninsula and was a significant regional sea power with political and trade relations with China and Japan. Baekje's nautical skills were instrumental in disseminating Buddhism and continental culture to Japan. In 660 CE, it was defeated by Tang China and Silla.
