Overview
Bagratid Armenia was an independent Armenian state founded by Ashot I of the Bagratuni dynasty in the early 880s, following two centuries of foreign rule. Both the Abbasid Caliphate and the Byzantine Empire recognized Ashot as a leader, with the Abbasids eventually recognizing him as king in 884 or 885. This kingdom led to the establishment of other Armenian principalities. Under Ashot III, Ani became the capital and a significant cultural and economic center. The kingdom declined in the early 11th century, with parts annexed by the Byzantine Empire. Despite resistance from King Gagik II, Bagratid Armenia was finally absorbed by Byzantine forces in 1045.
