Overview

The Banate of Bosnia was a medieval state located in what is today Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded in the mid-12th century. Although Hungarian kings considered it part of their Crown Lands, the Banate was a de facto independent feudal state for most of its existence. It was dissolved on October 26, 1377, when it was elevated to a kingdom. A significant part of its history was marked by a religiopolitical controversy concerning the native Christian Bosnian Church, which was condemned as heretical by the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. The Catholic Church, in particular, was antagonistic and persecuted its members through the Hungarians.
