Overview

Menteshe was an Anatolian beylik, a Turkish principality founded by Oghuz Turks in southwestern Anatolia after the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum declined. Established between 1260 and 1290 by Menteshe Bey, it was named after him. Its capital was Milas, and its territory roughly corresponded to ancient Caria or modern Muğla Province in Turkey. Important centers within the beylik included Beçin, Balat, and Fethiye. The beylik also controlled Aydın for a period, calling it "Güzelhisar," before it was transferred to the Aydinids. Menteshe existed until its dissolution in 1425 CE.
