Overview

Carantania, also known as Carentania, was a Slavic principality that emerged around 658 CE in the territory of present-day southern Austria and north-eastern Slovenia. From the mid-8th century, it allied with Bavaria against the Avars, becoming a vassal state of the Frankish Empire. During this period, the Christianisation of Carantanian Slavs began, primarily through the Archdiocese of Salzburg. By 828 CE, Carantania's internal autonomy was abolished, and its territory was integrated into the East Frankish administrative system, becoming a predecessor to the March of Carinthia by 889.
