Overview
Chūzan was one of three kingdoms that controlled Okinawa in the 14th century. Founded around 1314, it emerged from a period when Okinawa was governed by local chieftains. The island split into three more defined kingdoms, beginning the Sanzan period. Chūzan's King Shō Hashi conquered Hokuzan in 1419 and Nanzan in 1429, ending the Sanzan period and dissolving Chūzan as a separate entity. The unified Okinawan state became known as the Ryūkyū Kingdom, though it was still referred to as "Chūzan" in official documents.
