Overview
Chiang Mai, meaning "new city" in Thai, is the largest city in northern Thailand and the capital of Chiang Mai province. Founded in 1296, it served as the new capital of Lan Na, succeeding Chiang Rai. Located 700 km north of Bangkok in the Thai highlands, the city's position on the Ping River and its proximity to major trading routes contributed to its historical significance. As of 2023, the city municipality has a population of approximately 127,000, while the greater urban area, including surrounding districts, forms a metropolitan region with an estimated population exceeding 1 million. The city's heart is defined by a square area bordered by ancient red brick walls and a moat.
