Overview
The Comtat Venaissin, often called the Comtat, was a countship and part of the Papal States from 1274 to 1791. This independent enclave was located within the Kingdom of France, in what is now the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of Southern France. Its territory was roughly situated between the Rhône, the Durance, and Mont Ventoux, and included a small exclave around Valréas. The Comtat bordered the Principality of Orange and had its capital in Carpentras from 1320, after initially being based in Vaison-la-Romaine. It was dissolved on September 14, 1791.
