Overview
The County of Empúries, also known as Ampurias, was a medieval Catalonian county that existed from approximately 812 CE to 1402 CE. Centered on the town of Empúries and encompassing the Catalan region of Peralada, it corresponds to the historic comarca of Empordà. After the Frankish conquest in 785, Empúries and Peralada initially fell under the County of Girona before becoming a separate county around 813 under Ermenguer. It was merged with the County of Roussillon from 817 until 989, when the two counties separated upon the death of Gausfred I. The comital dynasty of Hugh I, who received Empúries, lasted until 1322. The last count, Hugh VI, sold the county in 1325, and it later became an apanage of the Crown of Aragon.
