Overview
The County of Anjou was a medieval French county, founded around 930, with its capital at Angers. Roughly co-extensive with the diocese of Angers, it was bordered by Brittany, Maine, Touraine, and Poitou. A 12th-century Count of Anjou, Geoffrey, established the core of what would become the Angevin Empire. The county existed until 1360, when it was elevated to the Duchy of Anjou within the Kingdom of France. The adjectival form is Angevin, and its inhabitants are known as Angevins.
