Overview
The County of Holland was a state within the Holy Roman Empire, founded around 880 CE. It later became part of the Burgundian Netherlands from 1433, and then the Habsburg Netherlands from 1482. In 1581, it transitioned to become the leading province of the Dutch Republic. The County of Holland was notable for its significant economic, cultural, military, and technological development. Its territory roughly corresponds to the modern-day provinces of North Holland and South Holland in the Netherlands. The county was eventually dissolved in 1795.
