Overview
The County of Osona, also known as Ausona, was a countship and one of the Catalan counties of the Marca Hispanica during the Early and High Middle Ages. Founded in 798 CE, it was centered around the capital city of Vic and its corresponding diocese, roughly aligning with the modern comarca of Osona. Its reconquest by Christian powers began in 798, with Vic falling into Frankish hands by 799. After a period of depopulation following a rebellion in 826, Wilfred the Hairy began repopulating the county in 879, making it a central part of Catalonia. A viscounty of Osona was established around 900, later changing its name to the viscounty of Cabrera. The county was dissolved in 1364 CE.
