Overview

The County of Toulouse was a countship in present-day southern France, centered on the city of Toulouse and its environs. Founded in 778 CE, it was initially ruled by Frankish counts under the sovereignty of the king of Francia. By the late 9th century, its rulers, the Counts of Toulouse, had gained total independence. The county was affected by the Albigensian Crusade in the 12th century, and by 1229, it formally submitted to the crown of France. The Counts of Toulouse continued to rule the town and surrounding county until its dissolution in 1271 CE.
