Overview

The Crown of Aragon was a composite monarchy that originated from the dynastic union of the Kingdom of Aragon and the County of Barcelona, founded on August 6, 1162. Ruled by a single king, its component realms maintained their own laws and parliaments. At its height in the 14th and 15th centuries, it was a thalassocracy controlling parts of the eastern Iberian Peninsula, southern France, and a Mediterranean empire including the Balearic Islands, Sicily, Sardinia, and Southern Italy. In 1479, it entered a new dynastic union with the Crown of Castile. The Crown of Aragon was abolished between 1707 and 1716 by the Nueva Planta decrees, following the War of the Spanish Succession.
