Overview
The Demak Sultanate was a Javanese Muslim state located on Java's north coast in present-day Demak, Indonesia. Founded around 1475 CE, it was initially a port fief of the Hindu-Buddhist Majapahit kingdom. Influenced by Muslim traders, it became the first Muslim state in Java and played a significant role in establishing Islam in Indonesia, particularly on Java and surrounding regions. The sultanate once dominated much of northern Java and southern Sumatra before its dissolution in 1548.
