Overview
The Democratic Republic of Vietnam, commonly known as North Vietnam, was a country in Southeast Asia that existed from 1945 to 1976. Founded on September 2, 1945, when Hồ Chí Minh declared independence, it was a member of the communist Eastern Bloc. North Vietnam opposed the anti-communist State of Vietnam and later the Western-allied Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). After a successful military offensive against South Vietnam in 1975, North Vietnam ceased to exist on July 2, 1976, when it merged with the South to form the contemporary Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
