Overview
The Duchy of Brunswick was a historical German state that existed from 1815 to 1918. Established by the Congress of Vienna as the successor to the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, its capital was the city of Brunswick. Throughout the 19th century, the duchy was part of the German Confederation, the North German Confederation, and from 1871, the German Empire. It was disestablished following the end of World War I, with its territory becoming the Free State of Brunswick within the Weimar Republic.
