Overview
The Duchy of Kalisz was a feudal district duchy in Greater Poland, centered on the Kalisz Land and with Kalisz as its capital. Established in 1177 after a rebellion led to the partition of the Duchy of Greater Poland, it was initially a fiefdom within the broader Duchy of Poland. Casimir II the Just of the Piast dynasty became its first ruler. The duchy gained independence in 1227 and existed in this form until 1279. In that year, it was united with the duchies of Gniezno and Poznań under Przemysł II, forming a reconstituted Duchy of Greater Poland.
