Overview
The Duchy of Lorraine, also known as the Duchy of Upper Lorraine, was a duchy within the Holy Roman Empire. Founded around 959-965 CE after the division of Lotharingia, it existed until 1766. Its capital was Nancy. The duchy was often coveted and briefly occupied by various powers, but was ruled by the House of Lorraine after 1473. In 1737, it was given to Stanisław Leszczyński, with the agreement that it would pass to France upon his death. Following his demise on January 1, 1766, the Duchy of Lorraine was annexed by the Kingdom of France.
