Overview
The Duchy of Nassau was an independent state that existed from 1806 to 1866 in what is now the German states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. It was a member of the Confederation of the Rhine and later the German Confederation. The duchy was named after Nassau Castle and its historical core city, Nassau, though Wiesbaden served as its capital from 1816, succeeding an earlier capital. In 1865, the Duchy of Nassau had 465,636 inhabitants. Following the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, it was occupied and annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia, becoming part of the Province of Hesse-Nassau.
