Overview
The Duchy of Saint Sava was a late medieval polity in Southeast Europe, existing from 1448 until its absorption by the Ottoman Empire in 1482. Founded and controlled by the Kosača noble family, its rulers held the title Duke of Saint Sava. The duchy's domains encompassed southern parts of modern-day Bosnia and Herzegovina, extending to coastal Croatia, northwestern Montenegro, and southwestern Serbia. Its founder, Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, titled himself Herceg of Saint Sava, a title that later gave rise to the region's name, Herzegovina. The duchy's name was recorded in various forms across different languages, including Latin, Italian, and German.
