Overview
The Early Pandyas were one of the three ancient Tamil kingdoms, alongside the Cholas and Cheras. Flourishing during the Sangam period, their initial capital was Korkai, later moving to Koodal (modern Madurai). Information about them comes primarily from literary sources like Sangam literature, as well as epigraphic, archaeological, and numismatic evidence. The kingdom extended from Travancore to the Vellaru river and the ocean. They were known for pearl fishery, with Korkai as a major center, and engaged in active maritime trade, exporting pearls, spices, ivory, and shells, and importing horses, gold, glass, and wine.
