Overview

The Emirate of Nekor, also known as the Şālihid Emirate, was an Arab emirate located in the Rif area of present-day Morocco. Founded in 710 CE by Şālih ibn Mansūr through a Caliphate grant, it was the first autonomous state in the Maghreb and adhered exclusively to Sunni Islam, specifically the Maliki school. Its initial capital was Tamsāmān, which later moved to Nekor. The ruling Banū Şālih dynasty, of Himyarite Arab descent, governed the region until about 1015, with the emirate officially dissolving in 1019 CE. The emirate ended with the destruction of its capital city Nekor in 1080.
