Overview
The Empire of Trebizond was a Byzantine Greek state located on the Black Sea coast, formed in 1204 CE. It was one of three Byzantine rump states that emerged after the Fourth Crusade and the establishment of the Latin Empire, claiming the imperial throne alongside the Empire of Nicaea and the Despotate of Epirus. Formed with the help of Georgia's interventions, it encompassed the Pontus region of Anatolia and parts of southern Crimea. Its emperors initially styled themselves as Roman emperors, though this claim was later altered. The empire was dissolved on January 1, 1461.
