Overview
The First Spanish Republic was a political regime that existed in Spain from February 11, 1873, to December 29, 1874. It was founded after King Amadeo's abdication, with a parliamentary majority of radicals, republicans, and democrats proclaiming the republic. The period was marked by tensions between federal and unitary republicans, the end of compulsory conscription, regulation of child labor, and the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico. It inherited the Third Carlist War and the Ten Years' War in Cuba, and faced the Cantonal rebellion. A coup in January 1874 led to a military dictatorship, and the Republic ended in December 1874 with the proclamation of Alfonso XII as king.
