Overview
The Four Oirats, also known as the Oirat Confederation or formerly the Eleuths, was a confederation of Oirat tribes in Western Mongolia. Founded around 1399, it marked the rise of the Western Mongols on the Mongolian Plateau. While the term "Four Oirats" was widely used, historians have not reached a consensus on the exact identity of the original four tribes. It is generally believed to refer to the Choros, Torghut, Dörbet, and Khoshut tribes, though some theories suggest the Oirats were political-ethnic units rather than consanguineous ones. The Kergüd tribe was also part of the confederation in its early period, which dissolved around 1628.
