French Colony of Guiana

French Guiana, also known as Guyane, is an overseas department and region of France situated on the northern coast of South America, within the Guianas and West Indies. Founded on March 21, 1946, it is fully integrated into the French Republic and is part of the European Union, using the euro as its official currency. Bordered by Suriname and Brazil, French Guiana covers an area of 84,000 km2 and has a low population density, with about half of its residents living in its capital, Cayenne. The official language is French, though French Guianese Creole is widely spoken. Its economy is significantly supported by the Guiana Space Centre.
