Overview
The Judicate of Gallura was a medieval kingdom and one of four Sardinian judicates, independent states whose rulers held the title of iudex or judge. Founded around 800 CE and dissolved in 1296, it encompassed the northeast region of Sardinia, with its main city at Olbia. The name Gallura, meaning rooster, was reflected in the judicate's 13th-century arms. Subdivided into ten curatoriae, Gallura initially owed allegiance to the Archdiocese of Pisa and remained a steadfast supporter, likely due to its proximity to the city of Pisa, often allying with the Kingdom of Cagliari.
