Overview
The Hafsid dynasty was a Sunni Muslim dynasty of Amazigh (Berber) descent that ruled Ifriqiya, encompassing modern-day Tunisia, western Libya, and eastern Algeria, from 1229 to 1574. Founded by Abu Zakariya Yahya, who declared independence after being appointed governor by the Almohad caliph, the dynasty established Tunis as its capital. Under rulers like al-Mustansir, the Hafsids consolidated their power, though internal conflicts later led to temporary divisions. A period of apogee was reached under Abu al-Abbas Ahmad II, but their power gradually declined in the 16th century. The Hafsids were supported by Spain against the encroaching Ottoman Empire until the final Ottoman conquest of Tunis in 1574 ended their rule. The Hafsid era also saw significant cultural and intellectual activity, including the construction of the first madrasas in the Maghreb.
