Introduction

The Nogai Horde controlled one of the key political spaces between the Volga and the Ural for a long period. Its history is essential for understanding the western direction of the Kazakh steppe.
Nogai mirzas relied on prestige inside the nomadic world, but the stability of the region also depended on temporary arrangements with neighboring powers. Because of that, the history of the Nogai Horde repeatedly combines alliance, fragmentation, and re-grouping.
For the Kazakh Khanate, the Nogai Horde appeared at times as a rival and at times as a partner.

ICharacter of the western frontier

Politics on the western frontier worked on three levels:
  • control over pasturelands and migration routes;
  • command of trade lines and crossing points;
  • preservation of balance between powerful lineages.
The strength of the Nogai Horde did not rest on a centralized bureaucracy. It rested on the ability to gather influential groups within a shared political field.
