Introduction

Moghulistan emerged in the mid-fourteenth century in the eastern part of the Chagatai world. Its core rested on the wide zone between Zhetysu and Eastern Turkestan.
The state had to work simultaneously with mobile steppe elites and urban regions. For that reason, the history of Moghulistan is not only a story of dynastic competition. It is also a story of how a frontier power tried to hold together diverse territories under constant pressure.
The political balance in Zhetysu later shaped the conditions in which the Kazakh Khanate first took root.

IRegional foundation

Several elements explain the durability of Moghulistan:
  • strategic passes and migration corridors in Zhetysu;
  • competition over the Chagatai inheritance;
  • the need to balance steppe amirs and local elites;
  • constant pressure from neighboring powers in the east and west.
These conditions turned Moghulistan into both a buffer state and an independent regional actor.
