Overview
The British Raj, also known as Crown rule in India, was the period of British colonial rule on the Indian subcontinent from 1858 to 1947. This system of governance began after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, when the rule of the East India Company was transferred to the British Crown. The region under British control was commonly called India and included areas directly administered by the United Kingdom, known as British India, and princely states ruled by indigenous rulers under British paramountcy. The British Raj was dissolved in 1947, leading to the partition of the subcontinent into the Union of India and the Dominion of Pakistan.
