Overview
Catalonia is an autonomous community and nationality of Spain, located in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, south of the Pyrenees. Founded around 801 CE, its capital and largest city is Barcelona. Catalonia is bordered by France and Andorra to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the east, and the Spanish autonomous communities of Aragon and Valencia to the west and south, respectively. Its official languages are Catalan, Spanish, and Aranese Occitan. Modern-day Catalonia largely comprises the medieval Principality of Catalonia, which formed a dynastic union with the Kingdom of Aragon in 1137, becoming a key part of the Crown of Aragon.
