Overview
The Eighteen Kingdoms, also known as the Eighteen States, were a group of fengjian states created in China by the military leader Xiang Yu in 206 BCE. This division occurred after the collapse of the Qin dynasty and marked the beginning of the turbulent Chu–Han Contention. These kingdoms were short-lived, with rebellions breaking out almost immediately. Liu Bang of Han eventually conquered the lands of the Three Qins, formally starting the Chu–Han Contention. After numerous battles, Han defeated Chu and subdued the other kingdoms, leading to Liu Bang becoming the first Emperor of the Han dynasty in 202 BCE.
