Overview
The Cispadane Republic was a short-lived client republic in northern Italy, founded on December 27, 1796, under the protection of the French army led by Napoleon Bonaparte. It was the first Italian sovereign state to adopt the Italian tricolour as its flag. On June 27, 1797, it merged with the Transpadane Republic, which had formerly been the Duchy of Milan, to form the Cisalpine Republic.
