Overview
Auvergne is a cultural and historical region located in central France. It is largely part of the current Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes administrative region. The historical Province of Auvergne was dissolved in 1790, and the administrative region of Auvergne existed from 1956 until its dissolution on December 31, 2015. The region is known for the "chaîne des Puys," a chain of volcanoes that began forming approximately 70,000 years ago, with the last confirmed eruption occurring around 4040 BCE.
