Overview
The County of Besalú was a historical state and one of the landlocked medieval Catalan counties. Roughly coterminous with the modern comarca of Garrotxa, it sometimes extended north into what is now France. Its capital was the village of Besalú. Founded in 988, the county experienced a century of independence before its annexation to the County of Barcelona. It was dissolved in 1111.
