Overview
Pallars Sobirà is a comarca, or county, located in the Alt Pirineu region of Catalonia, Spain. Its name, meaning "Upper Pallars," distinguishes it from Pallars Jussà. The capital and largest municipality of this Catalan county is Sort. Situated in the central Pyrenees, Pallars Sobirà is the fourth largest comarca in Catalonia by surface area, yet it has one of the country's lowest population densities, with approximately 7,000 inhabitants. It is home to the largest lake in the Pyrenees, Lake Certascan, and Catalonia's highest peak, Pica d'Estats. Much of Pallars Sobirà is a protected nature reserve, including parts of Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park and Alt Pirineu Natural Park.
