Overview
The County of Portugal was a medieval county in Southwestern Europe, existing between 868 and 1139. It was a predecessor to the Kingdom of Portugal, with its capital in Guimarães. The first county, a vassalage of the Kingdoms of Asturias, Galicia, and León, was established in the mid-ninth century and abolished in the mid-eleventh century following a rebellion. A second, larger entity under the same name was reestablished in the late 11th century. This second county was eventually elevated into an independent Kingdom of Portugal in the mid-12th century, with the identity of the Portuguese people forming within its territory.
