Overview
Rouergue was a former province of France, roughly corresponding to the modern department of Aveyron. Its historical capital was Rodez. Bounded by Auvergne to the north and Languedoc to the south and southwest, it also bordered Gévaudan to the east and Quercy to the west. During the Middle Ages, Rouergue was ruled by various entities, including England after the Treaty of Brétigny in 1360, Armagnac, and Languedoc. In 1790, it became a department and was renamed Aveyron. The province had a land area of 9,007 km2 and a population of 269,774 in 1999.
