Denmark-Norway

Denmark–Norway was a multi-national and multi-lingual real union that existed from the 16th to the 19th century, specifically from 1536 to 1814. It comprised the Kingdom of Denmark, the Kingdom of Norway (including the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Greenland), and the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. The state also held colonies such as the Danish Gold Coast, Danish India, and the Danish West Indies. Its inhabitants were primarily Danes, Norwegians, and Germans, with other groups including Faroese, Icelanders, and Inuit. Copenhagen and Christiania (Oslo) were among its main cities, and while Danish and German were primary official languages, others like Norwegian and Icelandic were also spoken. The union evolved from a personal union in 1536/1537 and became an absolute monarchy in 1660.
