Overview

Okjeo was an ancient Korean tribal state that existed in the northern Korean peninsula from approximately the 2nd century BCE to the 5th century CE. It was often simply called Okjeo, though it comprised Dong-okjeo, located in the Hamgyŏng provinces of North Korea, and Buk-okjeo, situated in the Duman River region. Buk-okjeo was also known as Chiguru or Guru. Okjeo bordered the minor state of Dongye to its south and shared a similar historical trajectory.
