Overview
The Duchy of Modena and Reggio was an Italian state founded in 1452 in Northwestern Italy, within the present-day Emilia-Romagna region. Ruled by the noble House of Este from its establishment, and by the Austria-Este branch from 1814, the Este dynasty was a significant patron of the arts. This patronage made the Duchy a cultural center during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The former country was dissolved in 1859.
