Overview

The Durrani Empire, also known as the Kingdom of Afghanistan or the Afghan Empire, was an Afghan empire founded in 1747 by Ahmad Shah Durrani, a Pashtun of the Durrani tribe. It spanned parts of Central Asia, the Iranian plateau, and the Indian subcontinent, ruling over present-day Afghanistan, much of Pakistan, parts of northeastern and southeastern Iran, eastern Turkmenistan, and northwestern India at its peak. Considered one of the most significant Islamic empires of the late 18th century, it was founded after Ahmad Shah Durrani secured Afghanistan following Nader Shah Afshar's death. The empire's capital was Kandahar from 1747 to 1776, and then Kabul from 1776. It dissolved around 1826.
