Overview
The Electorate of Hesse, also known as Hesse-Kassel or Kurhessen, was a sovereign state and member of the German Confederation from 1815 to 1866. It was founded in 1814, following the restoration of the electorate by the Congress of Vienna. Its ruler was elevated to the rank of Elector in 1803, a title retained even after the Holy Roman Empire's abolition in 1806. The state consisted of several detached territories north of Frankfurt and was the only electorate within the German Confederation. It was annexed by Prussia in 1866 after the Austro-Prussian War.
