Overview
The Empire of China was a country that existed from late 1915 to early 1916. It was a short-lived attempt by Chinese president Yuan Shikai to reinstate the monarchy in China, with himself as emperor. Founded on December 12, 1915, and dissolved on March 22, 1916, this effort ultimately failed. The attempt set back the republican cause by several years and led China into a period of fracture and conflict among various local warlords. It is also known in historiography as the Hongxian Monarchy.
